It's freezing out there! (winter 2025)

Winter is here, what to do at home?

Although a hard freezelike the one in 2021 is not expected, it is important to consider some recommendations during these cold days when temperatures will be below freezing.

While most insurance policies cover damage caused by leaks resulting from pipe freezing, it is important to know the following:

  1. Check your own policy to know what is covered, what is not, and under what circumstances.
  2. It is important to do what you can to keep internal pipes above freezing temperatures. For example: keep the heating on and have thermal insulation on exposed pipes.
  3. Drain the most exposed pipes, especially those related to garden irrigation. Similarly, try to disconnect exterior hoses.
  4. Thermally insulate all exterior pipes and water outlets, as well as filtering systems placed outside.
  5. If you have pipes or water systems (heater or filtration) in the attic or garage, monitor the temperature and try to prevent it from being near or below freezing (32°F, or 0°C). For example: if there are water pipes in the attic and the temperature is close to 32°F, open the attic door and allow the warm air from the heating to flow in.

Most policies do not cover damages if proper measures were not taken.

And on the road?

  1. If possible, avoid going out; the roads may be icy, and in our state and city, drivers do not have the necessary experience.
  2. If going out is unavoidable, stay informed about traffic news, so you know which roads are icy and if there have been accidents.
  3. Be especially careful when driving over bridges, as the wind passing underneath can cause the surface to freeze.

In general, be conservative, careful, and use common sense—it's better to be overly cautious than to face injuries, material losses, or other problems.

Beware! Individual space heaters should be avoided or used with extreme care, as they are one of the main causes of house fires in the United States. Also, be cautious or even avoid using heating systems that emit toxic gases (carbon monoxide and others), as poisoning can have fatal effects.
